I once saw a photograph of a horse standing on the tarmac of a busy airport. It felt like a surreal image of our time — an animal surrounded by airplanes.
Soon after, I learned that the Olympic show jumping events would take place in front of the Château de Versailles in Paris — and that most of the horses would be flown there.
Throughout history, the way humans treat horses has reflected the state of society. They have been tools of war, symbols of power, symbols of freedom, companions, workers.. So what does it say about us today when horses are flown around the globe in business class to compete in big entertainment arenas?
I kept returning to three images:
A horse in nature.
A horse in a plane.
A horse at the Olympics.
Three images that feel iconic.
Three spaces that seem incompatible. Is it possible to tell a story that combines all three images? Air Horse One began with that question.
