This project was born from a visceral impulse: to make a film, no matter what. I wasn’t trying to explore a specific theme or tackle a hot topic in our society. It was the characters who came to me first — figures living inside me, asking to speak and to exist. Complex, lovable, but deeply chaotic characters. The film mixes genres: crime caper, dramedy, coming-of-age story, almost an urban fairy tale.
It is also a film about failure and transformation. Dan is not a character who saves himself — he collapses, and in that collapse, something beautiful appears. Identity, ego, love, image — everything is questioned. Theft becomes a symbol of transmission. As if, in this world, we sometimes need to have a part of ourselves stolen in order to truly exist.
Skinny Bottines is an intuitive and free cinematic gesture. It follows two lost but beautiful characters in a feverish Montreal, with the desire to capture what is unstable, fragile, and always in motion.

Romain F. Dubois is a Montréal-based filmmaker. His work, noted for its singularity and poetry, explores love, marginality, and mystery. After a background in animation, drawing, and music videos, his first solo short SKINNY BOOTS is selected at Semaine de la Critique in 2026.
