I grew up in a religious Southern Baptist community in Little Rock, Arkansas, where I lived until I was 23. I moved to New York with my partner in 2021 a bit naively, thinking that if I could just get out of there, I’d be free. It was only a year or so into my time away that I had a bit of a mental breakdown, realizing that the rain clouds above my head followed me here, ever-present and prone to downpour when I least expected it. I grew up assuming that if the people in my life knew who I really was, that they would be ashamed of me. I even convinced myself that the mixtape of songs I wrote and recorded on GarageBand on my mom’s computer confessing my undying love for my girl best friend when she moved away was completely platonic. I mean hello, I had a boyfriend! I learned that love was conditional, and the condition was never, ever telling the truth, even to myself. And even though I’m safe and sound here, with my feet on the ground and my head held high, sometimes that belief rears its ugly head in the most intimate spaces, with the safest people I know. I think that a lot of people grow up believing that they have to hide in order to belong. How much can we disclose until the people in our lives inevitably reject us? How long can we keep up the elaborate charade we’ve created for ourselves? And is it possible to find each other, despite all of our odd proclivities and shame-ridden fantasies and deep-seated fears, and hold each other, still?
