Too many stories can tell the horrible consequences of the housing crisis. Those of Jeannette and Frances make us feel the difficult experience of eviction. During long months of anguish, brief hopes and uprooting, Jeannette and Frances struggle, alone and surrounded, against a phenomenon that is becoming more and more pronounced: losing your home.

I developed JUSTE UN TOIT (LOSING YOUR HOME) with Alexandre Petitclerc, a doctoral student in philosophy and a specialist in housing issues. This project stands at the crossroads of his research work and my cinematographic approach. The common goal was to bring to life the experiences and emotions of people forced to leave their homes – a dimension often absent from academic research. I thus approached the project intending to immerse the audience in the poignant reality of eviction. During pre-production, the discovery of Jeannette and Frances was a turning point. These two elderly women, although they did not know each other, shared immense courage and a fierce determination to fight their eviction. Their complementarity – evident both in their on-screen energy and their socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds – allowed us to create a mirroring effect in the editing. This interwoven dynamic became, in a sense, the cornerstone of the narrative. My artistic approach, minimalist and intimate with the use of a tripod-mounted camera, aimed to immerse the viewer at the heart of the distress experienced during an eviction, without falling into miserabilism. Beyond fostering empathy for those facing eviction, the aim was also to mobilize the public on a situation that knows no boundaries: evictions, the housing crisis, and gentrification.

LOSING YOUR HOME is his first documentary short film.
