The idea for the film came to me in 2018, during a screenwriting workshop. We were asked to write a scene of about ten pages, set in a single location with only two characters. Apart from two people talking, I found it very difficult to imagine that anything interesting could come out of it. It was then that I delivered a first version of this story, which now bears little resemblance to the final product of Uasheshkun, as the script has evolved and changed many times since.
What I am also trying to do with this film is to offer responses to the grip that darkness has in First Nations communities: culture, language, identity, spirituality, traditions, prayer, and so on. Suicide is a subject that affects me deeply. At the age of seven, I was exposed to suicide by a very close family member. That exposure never stopped, as many suicides have occurred within my community.
