"Outside Center" refers to a position in rugby, but also to decentralization and exile. and exile. The film tells the story of Desmond Grant, a young homosexual of rejected by his father and raised in part by his grandmother, who sets out to start a new life in Germany. a new life in Germany. On arriving in Munich, he rediscovers a sense of family and a sense of family and solidarity through the Munich Monks rugby team of gay men who, like him, have come from atypical backgrounds.
OUTSIDE CENTER takes a fresh look at sport, a subject too often approached from the angle of toxic or heteronormative masculinity. the angle of toxic or heteronormative masculinity. Here, the point of view is that of a double marginality marginality: that of a black, gay immigrant living in a fairly conservative town.
Growing up with a father who was an excellent volleyball player (Eli Jean Tahchi), I had to deal with a lot of pressure from the community. a lot of pressure from my family to play sports. However, as a as a gay man, I didn't feel comfortable joining a sports team. Even the school sports classes were a nightmare for me. In a desire to heal and better understand understanding my rejection of sport, I wanted to tackle this still taboo and important subject.
Through cinema vérité, intimate and vulnerable moments of our protagonist's life intertwine with tough and competitive training sessions with the Rugby team. Beneath their sports gear, bodies clash, learning to collaborate and understand each other through gestures and rituals. But above all, they learn to reappropriate the very idea of sport, once synonymous with rejection.
For Desmond and his team, united by their queer identity, it's not just about the rules of the game; they must have the courage to overcome the loneliness of their difference, to gradually get to know each other and find trust in mutual respect. In this context, sport becomes an essential pretext for building a community on which each individual can rely to flourish. In a world where stereotypes and societal pressures often prevent individuals from truly being themselves, and at a time when we talk about intersectionality, this film adds a dimension to cinema portraiture, breaking many of the boxes into which society tries to put us. How does one find one's place in a world hostile to difference?
OUTSIDE CENTER is the story of a man who finds his center outside.
