Director's statement

It’s like pressing “rec” at the very moment when roles are reversed: when it becomes the child’s turn to care for the parent. As I learn to wash my grandmother’s body—the same body that once so often washed mine—I am torn between the tenderness of the moment and the sadness of what it implies. A visceral longing to “set things back in order,” to once again be the five-year-old girl nestled in her grandmother’s arms. This film was born out of an unexpected detour in my life, when I became my grandmother’s caregiver after she fractured her ankle. This new intimacy, while bringing us closer than ever, also confronted us with an undeniable truth: if her ankle heals, my grandmother herself is nonetheless fading. Clear-eyed about her decline, she speaks with resilience of her “little griefs”: those parts of herself that slowly vanish over time, making her less lively, less alert, less quick. Where she manages to accept the inevitable, I struggle to resign myself to it. The film forced me to face a painful truth: if I had been visiting her less and less, it wasn’t (as I liked to believe) because of a busy schedule, but because I found it unbearable to watch her grow old, slow down, and fade away. Avoidance was easier. This film seeks to explore precisely our dismay in the face of our loved ones’ decline. A window into an intimacy both tender and bittersweet, the work soberly examines our ability to accompany our elders in their fading years, while confronting the fears and vulnerabilities this awakens in ourselves. Bearing witness to a loved one’s decline acts as a distorting mirror, inevitably reflecting back our own mortality. This film is an invitation to reflect on how we might accept what, inevitably, will escape us all.
